Sponsored Pedal Push and Scoot!

In November playgroup will be holding a fundraising “Pedal, Push & Scoot” as part of this term’s theme of TRANSPORT. Children are invited to bring their own bikes, prams, and scooters (or use some of those we have at Woodland Corner) to take part in doing circuits of the school playground Grand Prix style! However, the aim is not speed but to complete as many circuits as little legs are able with each child being sponsored for their efforts. All money raised will go towards buying a beautiful set of Community Playthings Building Blocks as seen on the poster in the lobby. Please download your sponsor form from the blog if you do not already have one.

The “Pedal, Push & Scoot” will run from 1.30pm to 2.45pm and will include light refreshments served at Woodland Corner. At the end of the event parents will need to leave the premises since school playtime will be taking place soon afterwards and Woodland Corner will be being prepared for After School Club.

We hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join in this fun fundraising event.

Fun at the Nayland Festival

The Nayland Festival weekend this weekend (17th-19th September) was a huge success all round – and Woodland Corner was pleased to be involved by organising the Duck Race, doing a slot for the flower show, producing a scarecrow for the Scarecrow Competition and also holding our regular fundraising cake sale on the Saturday morning!!

Huge thanks to all the staff, parents, children and committee who helped in all these activities. The duck race was great fun – we sold all 92 ducks and Fen Street was thronged with people cheering their ducks on to the finish! Congratulations to Alex Lee Smith who was the ultimate winner. The flower display (a creatively decorated toy digger!) and the innovative Buzz Lightyear Scarecrow kept the children occupied for the week before the festival – much fun was had by them and the staff! Woodland Corner's scarecrow was beaten into second place, however, by one of our children - Millie Tasker - who had made a fantastic effort.

And finally the Cake Stall had its usual abundance of beautiful homemade cakes thanks to our massively generous supporters. In total we raised well over £200 for Woodland Corner over the course of the weekend – so once again thank you to all.

Playgroup's Visit to Nayland Airfield

On Thursday 16th September the children and their parents, grandparents and carers went to visit Nayland Airfield.
We met Will and Rachel Hitchcock and Will showed us his 1946 Aeronca Champion. He then took off and flew a great circle around the valley waggling the Plane’s wings to wave at us, before landing to the clapping and cheers of the children! Each child had the opportunity to sit in the cockpit and try on the pilot’s ear protectors. We were able to go and look at the seven other planes in the hanger; it was very exciting to see the planes close up.

Our thanks go to Will and Rachel Hitchcock and Tony at the airfield and to Jules Wormington for being our official photographer.

On Thursday 16th September Nayland Playgroup children and their parents/carers are invited on a visit to Nayland Airfield as part of our "Transport" learning theme this term.
One of our parents has kindly agreed to show us his light aircraft and will be flying it for us so the children can experience seeing a plane taking off and landing close up!
Weather permitting, we will leave Woodland Corner at 9.30am and return in time for the end of the morning session at 12.15. We hope that as many children and their parents/carers as possible will join us; however we are unable to transport unaccompanied children to the airfield, for health and safety reasons. If your child normally attends on a Thursday and this causes you difficulty please speak to Mel or Sue.
In the event of bad weather the visit will be cancelled and a normal, morning Playgroup session will proceed.
Please indicate whether you and your child will be attending to Woodland Corner Staff asap.

Funshine Holiday Club Week 1

Children at Woodland Corner enjoyed lots of activities in the first week of Funshine Holiday Club . These included a river walk and picnic on Monday where we avoided some fierce looking cows with big horns but spent a lot of time admiring the pig and piglets at The Anchor.  We then had a Treasure Hunt looking for clues around the grounds of Nayland Primary School. On Tuesday we did glass painting, had an obstacle race and made faces from vegetables.

On Wednesday we took the bus into Colchester and joined in some activities going on in Castle Park.  Two of the chiildren were brave enough to get up and tell a joke in a childrens show and we saw a Punch and Judy show and those that wanted were able to have their faces painted.  We went into Hollytrees Toy Museum and hunted for rats (not real ones) before going to the Natural History Museum where the children were very interested in a huge model of a stag beetle. We also spent time in the Castle Park playground. There were some very tired children coming home on the bus.

Thursday was cooking day and the results looked very delicious and later we went on a minibeast hunt and played giant snakes and ladders.  On Friday the children made some very interesting clay models, made masks and took part in woodland activities.

We are all looking forward to our next week of Holiday Club which starts on the 23rd August. The Gallery has several photos from week 1 included for you to see!

Playgroup Sports Day

Parents, Grandparents and Friends all joined together in the sunshine, to watch the Playgroup children take part in Woodland Corner's very first Sports Day.

It was a very happy occasion and all the hard work of the children and Playgroup Staff paid off, as all the children took part in the races and then proudly showed off their medals and certificates at the award ceremony. The event was followed by a big family picnic in the garden of Woodland Corner. A perfect ending to a very busy term at Playgroup!

Teddy Bear's Picnic

On Wednesday 21st July Duckling and Cygnets classes are holding their annual Teddy Bears Picnic.

Nayland Playgroup children and their families are invited to join them at 11.15 for a Teddy Bear hunt in the woods to be followed by a picnic in the Duckling and Cygnets garden finishing around 12.30.

Parents who wish to join in the fun should return at 11am to collect children attending playgroup that morning. If your child does not normally attend that day you are welcome to attend with your child and should meet in the Duckling class garden at 11.15am.

Playgroup's First Sports Day!

Thursday 22nd July will be Nayland Playgroup’s first ever Sports Day.
We would like to invite families and friends to join us at Woodland Corner at 11am to watch children’s races. Afterwards we will have a picnic in the garden at Woodland Corner finishing around 12.45.

Please provide picnic lunches for both days. There will be no hot school lunches available on either day and no Lunch Club for Ducklings children.

Parents/carers not attending should collect their children at normal pick up times. Both events will be cancelled if it is raining and playgroup sessions will continue until normal time.

Please inform staff if you and/or  your child will be attending our Sports Day.

Playgroup learn about ponies and traps.

Playgroup visited a group with ponies and traps who had stopped to rest on the river bank in Nayland. The drivers who were on their way to Ipswich Common down the A12, also had a horse called A12 , who earned its name after escaping down the dual carriage way and stopping traffic. They were kind enough to stay a while longer so that the children could visit. The children were very excited by their visit, they were allowed to pet the ponies and sit in the cart. The drivers then showed the children how they hitched their ponies to the cart, before they carried on to their destination.

Nayland Playgroup Beach Trip 2010

This year our annual jaunt to Frinton will be on Thursday 15th July.
All playgroup children are welcome to come but must be accompanied by a parent or carer. To save costs, transport is by parents own cars.

The meeting place will be opposite the end of Pole Barn Lane on the Esplanade at about 10.30 am. A map is on the back of this letter.

Cross the railway crossing at Frinton then take the first turn left into Pole Barn Lane. Follow the road until you reach the junction at the beach. Parking is available opposite. We will tie some balloons to a staff car to help you spot us. There is a path which leads to the beach where you will find us. The path is quite steep but is suitable for pushchairs. Departure time is up to you but usually depends on the weather. If you need to be back for school finishing time you should allow at least an hour.

Please bring your own packed lunch, buckets and spades etc.

There will not be a regular playgroup session on the 15th July unless the trip is cancelled due to heavy rain when playgroup session will go ahead as normal. Lunch Club is also cancelled. If there is any doubt about the suitability of the weather a message will be left on the Woodland Corner answer machine (01206 263054) for you to ‘phone in and check.

Band, Beer and BBQ Night a Great Success!!!

On Saturday 22nd May Woodland Corner hosted its first Band and Barbeque night at Nayland Village Hall. Local band ‘ Out of Exile’ played a range of 80s, 90s and 00s tracks. A fantastic barbeque was provided by Evans butchers in Dedham and the Woodland Corner team manned the bar, kitchen and sold raffle tickets during the evening. It was a really well supported event and raised £1042.20 for Woodland Corner to buy supplies and equipment for the children who attend. Many thanks go to the committee and staff of Woodland Corner who organised and staffed the event. Thanks also go to the parents who volunteered to work behind the bar during the evening and to all of you who supported our fundraising night. From the feedback that we have received, expect another event soon!

'Give Mums a break!' a great success!

Sunday 25th April was our first "Give Mums a Break" day at Woodland Corner. The aim of the event was to encourage involvement and interest of dads in early home learning and to facilitate socialising with other dads they may not normally see. There was a Treasure Hunt in and around the woods which culminated at Woodland Corner for the 'Treasure'.

Over 25 dads/grandads and a few mums/grandmas joined us bringing between them over 30 children.  Educational literature was out on display, and a photo album of the children at Woodland Corner playing and learning.  We included some interesting activities they could try with their children which included a popular dinosaur excavation, a super hero scene and outside play.

Hot dogs and hot chocolate were provided for a small donation and a photographer joined us for the event. Tracy Morter Photography taking pictures of the dads playing in the woods with their children.  Parents will be able to buy them in a frame for a small fee.
