Forest School - Week 5

Today was a wet day, so we decided to build shelters in case it got really rainy. We helped put the shelter up and loved camping out in it, and running in and out! Today we had a go at using the bow saw to cut wood cookies, we learnt about how to use it safely and how only two children can be in the tool area at one time, one to hold the wood down and one using the saw. Then the person holding the wood down is next to use the saw. We then used the hand drill again to drill a hole in the wood cookie so we can thread it later on if we wanted to.
We decided to make some leaf art as there were so many lovely coloured leaves on the ground, so we went off and found first yellow leaves, then green and then brown and made a lovely picture. This leaf art was inspired by environmental artist, Andy Goldsworthy.
As it has been a bit wetter, we noticed lots of fungi growing all over the forest; on the forest floor and all over the logs! We also looked in a log pile house and found a hedgehog hibernating! We had to be really careful and quiet so as not to disturb it. Next week, we are going to make hedgehog houses with sticks and leaves just in case any more hedgehogs are looking for a home!
We will be sending out a questionnaire soon to get yours and your child's views on Abbie's Forest School sessions.
